Whispered Garden
Whispered Garden revives the legacy of late 19th century Sultanabad carpets from Arak, a city that became synonymous with the art of large scale floral weaving under Ziegler & Co.’s commission. While traditional Sultanabads favored earthy reds and deep indigos, this piece softens that lineage into a restrained symphony of blush, celadon, and faded coral, tones that feel washed by light and time. Every element of the composition speaks to the original Persian sensibility, the elongated palmettes, scrolling vinery, and open field structure, yet it has been deliberately reinterpreted for modern sensibilities. The design’s sense of spaciousness allows the weave itself to breathe, one can see the movement of handspun wool and the gentle abrash that only natural dyes can produce. The rug’s surface has an almost ethereal luminosity, the kind that reveals itself slowly, changing subtly through the day. It would sit beautifully in a light filled room, where its faded tones lend an atmosphere of quiet sophistication rather than ornamentation.
Design note: Sultanabad weaving reached its peak when Persian artisans began producing for Western markets under Ziegler & Co., blending Persian aesthetics with European restraint. Whispered Garden continues that dialogue, a bridge between eras where history feels alive but never heavy.
